  • Fully Weaned

The day has come.  I think every mother who nurses her child knows how emotional and sad this day can be.  At one year and eight months G is now getting no more physical nourishment from me.  A few weeks ago we set up the goal for G to be completely weaned sometime at the beginning of the new year.  Surprising, G did really well.  I guess she was ready after all.  I initially wanted to continue breastfeeding till she was two but decided that wasn't gonna happen with the new baby and all.  For those who think two years old is a bit long...I thought so too at first but after doing some research found out that on average kids around the world wean around age 3 or 4.  And the World Health Organization recommends two years of nursing.

Thankfully G did fine weaning.  We were down to just three feedings a day.  The morning was easy to drop.  The nap feeding was hard for her since this was the only way she knew how to fall asleep.  She cried the first day and then looked at me the next day during nap time and said, "No more mum mum?"  She now lays in bed with me while I read her a few books and falls asleep in no time!  And then tonight, after her bedtime routines, I picked up her out of the rocking chair and put her into her crib without mentioning there was no more mum mum.  She looked panicked at first and pointed to the rocking chair and then cried for two minutes wondering why the change in routine.  But her papa was there to calm her and told her to lay down and amazingly she did and fell asleep after a few minutes!

After that whole ordeal tonight, hubby gave me a hug.  I told him I was kinda sad now knowing she wasn't needing me any more for nourishment.  And to make me feel all better he says to me, "Yeah, next thing you know she'll leave us and head for college."  Thanks hubby for the reality check.  Haha!

What was your experience like?  Was weaning your child hard?

  • I was done with that at 13 months for M, but still going with E. I think she is almost ready. Within the past 2 months we were able to drop 2 of the 3 feedings, so I think it's more of me than her. =p

  • awww~ i bet it was tough! it was totally tough for me but not such a big deal for evan. it was just an emotional time. you guys are both growing up but that doesn't mean you aren't growing closer! =)
